STOKE EDITH.

STOKE EDITH is a village and parish, 6 miles east from Hereford, and 8 miles west from Ledbury, in the hundred of Radlow, Hereford union, county court district, archdeaconry and bishopric; and deanery of Weston. The church of St. Edith is a plain stone building, with a fine tower and lofty spire. The register dates back to the reign of Queen Elizabeth. The living is a rectory, with the curacy of Westhide attached, value about £500; the Rev. William Henry Lambert, M.A., of Merton College, Oxford, is the rector; the patronage is the Foley family. There are several schools in this and the adjoining parishes, supported chiefly by Lady Emily Foley, to whom the manor belongs. Stoke Edith Park, the residence of Lady Foley, is a fine building, situated near the church, and in an extensive and picturesque park. The population in 1861 of Stoke Edith township was 332; the acreage is 2,852; the population of Westhide chapelry is 174.

PERTON is a hamlet; Stokebridge, Old house, Showle Court and Free Town are farms.
