SUTTON ST. MICHAEL, Herefordshire - Extract from National Gazetteer, 1868

"SUTTON ST. MICHAEL, a parish in the hundred of Broxash, county Hereford, 4½ miles N.N.E. of Hereford, its post town, and 1 mile E. of the Moreton railway station. The village is situated on the river Lug, in Marden. On a hill near is Sutton Walls, a camp of 30 acres. It is said to have been the site of King Offa's palace, where he killed Ethelbert in 792. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Hereford, value £64. The church is dedicated to St. Michael. The parochial charities produce about £8 per annum. T. Evans, Esq., is lord of the manor."
