Sawtry St Andrew

The Sawtry parish of St Andrew contained a wood, known as Aversley Wood. The parish was inclosed by Act of Parliament in 1804. The parish was united with that of Sawtry All Saints in 1873. In 1879 both churches were demolished and a new church for both parishes was erected on the site of All Saints and dedicated to All Saints & St Andrew.

Cemeteries

The cemetery of Sawtry St Andrew still exists. However, the Monumental Inscriptions have not yet been recorded by the Huntingdonshire FHS.

Church History

The church of St Andrew consisted of a chancel, nave, west tower and south porch. The records of it are scanty, but its walls seem to have been of rubble largely plastered outside. Its roofs were of tiles overhanging at the eaves. The western tower seems to have been without buttresses, to have been lit with small slits and covered with a low pyramidal tiled roof. The south porch had an outer archway of one continuous chamfered roof.

The church was demolished in 1879.
