THERE are no titles of this class chronologically ascertained till the parliament called by Simon Montfort, earl of Leicester, in the reign of king Henry the third.

 


SUMMONED BY THE EARL OF LEICESTER

LORD CAMOIS.

Ralph de Camois. The title expired in 1420.

 


LORD SAINT JOHN OF STANTON.

Roger de Saint John. The title expired in John, second lord Saint John of Stanton.

 


LORD MONTCHENSY.

William de Montchensy for that time only. The title is claimed by the earl of Shrewsbury.

 


LORD SEGRAVE.

Nicholas de Segrave. The title became extinct in this family upon the death of John, third lord Segrave, 1353.

MOWBRAY.

John Mowbray, lord Mowbray, father of Thomas first duke of Norfolk, succeeded to the title of baron Segrave in right of Elizabeth, his wife, daughter of John Segrave third lord Segrave. The title is claimed by the duke of Norfolk and the earl of Berkeley.

 


LORD VESCI.

John de Vesci. The title became extinct in this family upon the death of William, second lord Vesci, 25 June 1314.

ATON.

Gilbert de Aton succeeded to the title of baron Vesci in right of Margery, his great grandmother, third cousin of John and William de Vesci, lords Vesci.

BROMFLETE, -- ---- 1389.

Thomas de Bromflete succeeded to the title of baron Vesci in right of Anastasia, his wife, daughter of William de Aton lord Vesci. Henry, his son, had summons to parliament by the title of baron Bromflete 24 January 1449, which title became extinct at his death 16 January 1468, and that of lord Vesci descended to the family of Clifford.

 


LORD BASSET OF DRAYTON.

Ralph de Basset. The title became extinct in this family upon the death of Ralph, fourth lord Basset of Drayton, 1389.

SHIRLEY.

Thomas Shirley, ancestor to earl Ferrers, married Isabel, daughter and heiress of Ralph Basset third lord Basset; but the title remained dormant in this family. It is in the earl of Leicester.

LORD ROOS OF HAMLAKE.

Robert de Roos had summons to parliament by the titles of baron Roos of Hamlake, Truibut and Belvoir, which titles became extinct in this family upon the death of Edmund, tenth lord Roos, 13 October 1508, and are in the duke of Rutland.

John D'Eivil for that time only.

 


LORD NEWMARCH.

Adam de Newmarch for that time only.

MOELS, -- ----- 1297.

John de Moels had summons to parliament in the reign of king Edward the first by the titles of baron Newmarch and Moels in right of Hawise, his grandmother, niece of Adam de Newmarch lord Newmarch, which titles became extinct in this family upon the death of John, fourth lord Newmarch, 1337.

BOTREAUX, -- ---- 1368.

William Botreaux had summons to parliament in the reign of king Edward the third by the titles of baron Newmarch, Moels and Botreaux, in right of Isabel his mother, daughter of John de Moels, fourth lord Newmarch. The titles became extinct in this family upon the death of William, third lord Newmarch, 1461.

LORD COLVILE.

Walter de Colvile. The title expired in Robert, fourth lord Colvile, 1365.

 


LORD BERTRAM OF MITFORD.

Roger de Bertram for that time only.

 


LORD BASSET OF SAPCOTE.

Ralph Basset. The title expired in Ralph, third lord Basset, 1372.

 


LORD GAUNT.

Gilbert de Gaunt, nephew of Gilbert created earl of Lincoln 1153, had that earldom bestowed upon him by Louis, dauphin of France, 1216. Gilbert, his son, had summons to parliament by the title of baron Gaunt, which title became extinct upon the death of Gilbert, second lord Gaunt, 1298.

LORD THWENG.

Marmaduke de Thweng. The title became extinct upon the death of William, second lord Thweng, 1374.

 


LORD FURNIVAL.

Thomas de Furnival had summons to parliament by the titles of baron Furnival and Lovetot. Thomas, second lord Furnival, succeeded 1318 to the title of lord Verdon in right of Joan, his wife, daughter of Theobald Verdon first lord Verdon. The titles became extinct in this family upon the death of William, fourth lord Furnival, 1382.

NEVILE, -- ----- 1383.

Thomas Nevile, son of John, fourth lord Nevile of Raby, had summons to parliament in the reign of king Richard the second by the titles of baron Furnival, Lovetot and Verdon in right of Joan his wife, daughter of William de Furnival, fourth lord Furnival. The titles became extinct in this family 1407, and are claimed by the duke of Norfolk and the earl of Shrewsbury.

LORD GREYSTOC.

John de Greystoc. The title became extinct in this family upon the death of Ralph, eighth lord Greystoc, 1 June 1487.

Geoffrey de Say. The title became extinct in this family upon the death of John, fourth lord Say, 1382.

Michael de Poynings. Richard, sixth lord Poynings, succeeded to the titles of baron Fitzpayne and Brian in right of Isabel, his mother, daughter of Robert Fitzpayne second lord Fitzpayne. The titles became extinct in this family upon the death of Edward, eighth lord Poynings, 1522, and are in the duke of Northumberland.

Hubert de Saint Quintin. The title is in the earl of Pembroke.
