NAMES FROM JOURNALS OF JAMES BOSWELL 1760s James Boswell is perhaps best known as the biographer of Dr Samuel Johnson. Boswell was a Scot, a bit of a rake, later a lawyer, and not a particularly engaging personality (in my opinion). He wrote his journals over many years (with gaps) but they remained lost to the world for a century and a half after his death in 1795. The London Journal was the first to be published, in 1950. Though Boswell moved in high society, his journals mention some common people, including girls whom he picked up, tradesmen, and fellow travellers. Some of these names may not be recorded anywhere else. Though there are not very many of these names, they do seem well worth recording. At this stage I have read the London Journal and the journal under the title Boswell in Search of a Wife, which ends with his marriage to Margaret Montgomerie. I have read part of his Life of Samuel Johnson. I have coded the entries as LJ for London Journal, SW for In Search of a Wife, and L for the Life of Johnson. ==================================================================== ADYE Mary Lichfield, gave Johnson info to Boswell.
