"BEKESBOURNE, (or Beaksbourne) a parish in the hundred of Bridge and Petham, lathe of St. Augustine, in the county of Kent, 3 miles to the S.E. of Canterbury. It is one of the subordinate members of Hastings cinque port. A branch of the Stour runs by the parish. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Canterbury, of the value of £211, in the gift of the archbishop. The church is dedicated to St. Peter. Bekesbourne House is the principal residence. The parish contains 1,115 acres, part of which is laid out in hop-grounds."
