"BLEAN, (or Blean Church, or St. Cosmus and Damian in the Blean), a parish in the hundred of Whitstable, lathe of St. Augustine, in the county of Kent, 2 miles to the N.W. of Canterbury. The Whitstable railway runs through it. The parish is situated in Blean Forest, a rough tract of woodland which belongs to the crown. Hops are cultivated here, and part of the land is covered with coppices. Blean is the seat of a Poorlaw Union. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Canterbury, of the value of £346, in the patronage of the Master of Eastbridge Hospital. The church is dedicated to SS. Cosmus and Damian, and has several monuments. The parochial charities amount to £3 a year."
