Church History
It was founded before 1514. Worship at this chapel is reputed to go back to Saxon times. There are some positive records of a chapel that go back to 1514. With the exception of the chancel, the chapel was rebuilt in 1789. It was enlarged in 1837 when the chancel and east end were rebuilt and and a gallery added. A School, on School lane, was built by Wilbraham Edgerton in 1838 and the building served as a function room for the tenants of Ashworth Estate. It closed as a day school in 1900. Ashworth was a detached part of the Manor of Middleton and the chapel remained in Middleton Parish until 1867, when it became a Parish in its own right. At that time it served a large area and had 200 scholars in the Sunday School. In 1949 Ashworth Parish was united with that of St Paul,Norden. St James is now a listed building. It was lit by gas and the organ was blown by hand until 1955 when electricity was installed
