Barrow in Furness Cemetery

Church picture

Barrow in Furness Cemetery,
Devonshire Road,
Barrow in Furness
Lancashire

Entrance

History

Opened 1873, the land having been offered by the Duke of Devonshire at a nominal price. Most burials previously had to go to Dalton. The crematorium within the grounds was added in 1962.

Records

All the main finding aids are kept at the Cemetery Office, although microfiche copies of the registers 1873-1984 [only] are available at Cumbria Record Office, Barrow. Furness Family History Society members have also produced an index for 1873-1900, but not so far beyond that date (which means that any speculative searches at the record office can be extremely slow). The grounds and the registers were originally split into C of E, Nonconformist, and Roman Catholic sections. Whilst every effort has been made to record exact details of record office and library holdings you are recommended to check with them before visiting to ensure that they do hold the records and years you wish to examine. Similarly check with transcript publishers to ensure they cover the records and years you require before making a purchase.
