Church History

It was founded in 1825. Bethesda Congregational Chapel and its burial ground were opened by Doctor Raffles on the 6th of July in Lower Street, near Nelsons Row (Bethesda Road).

In 1900 the Bethesda Chapel was rebuilt and this building closed probably around the end of the 1970s. They moved to the old Primitive Methodist church on the corner of Lune Grove and Central (now Grasmere) Road and had to finally close in 2010.

The Independent churches were ones in which each congregation was autonomous, upholding the principles of independence. In the 19th century they became known as Congregational.

In 1972 the Congregational church joined with the English Presbyterian church to become the United Reformed Church.
