Church History

It was founded in 1872 and closed in 1990.

Initial church was corrugated iron, and was hence named 'The Iron Church' but it was soon replaced by the present building which opened in 1897. It had a very large Sunday School. Lord Leverhulme was a major benefactor of building.

The Centenary was celebrated in 1972 - hence "founded" in 1872. That said, its a little less clear. It started as a mission outreach of St Georges Rd Congregational Church.

It closed in 1990 - final service 29 April 1990 and the Church is now an antiques centre.

In 1972 the Congregational church joined with the English Presbyterian church to become the United Reformed Church.

Church Records

Records/publications going back to 1896, incl bapt and marriages are deposited at Bolton Central Library. Some earlier information is available in St Georges Rd Congregational Church material (the mother church).

Whilst every effort has been made to record exact details of record office and library holdings you are recommended to check with them before visiting to ensure that they do hold the records and years you wish to examine. Similarly check with transcript publishers to ensure they cover the records and years you require before making a purchase.

This site provides historical information about churches, other places of worship and cemeteries. It has no connection with the churches themselves.
