Church History

It was founded in 1892.
This mission was founded as St. Saviour's when Bishop Vaughan sent the Rev. Arnold Nohlmans to St. Mary's to establish a new church. Fr. John Aukes, a Dutch priest, soon took up the same work and made a chapel over a blacksmith's shop. Bishop Vaughan laid the stone for a two-storey school-chapel in 1893. The chapel was solemnly opened at the end of the same year by Archbishop Scarisbrick.

From 1896 to 1902 there were three priests here for a short time. Fr. Wookey (1897 to 1901) was faced by a rapid growth of the school population. "When the school was opened in 1894 the number of scholars enrolled was about 160; now, after six years, the number on the registers is 380. . . . It is our proud boast that we have never yielded up a single school to the School Board, but that we are ready to make sacrifice after sacrifice to secure a religious education for our children."

Fr. Wm. Shine (1902-1913) built a new house and a fine church in 1908. Bishop Casartelli laid the foundation stone and opened the church. Fr. J. Connor and Fr. H. Atkinson laboured here for several years. Father W. Fletcher is the present Pastor.

Taken from "Salford Diocese and its Catholic past", a survey by Charles A. Bolton, a Priest of the above Diocese. Published 1950 on the First Centenary for the Diocese of Salford.
