Church History

It was founded in 1861.

For ten years the "old rag shop" purchased in 1861 served for church and school. Fr. John Fraser was made the first Rector of the church which was opened in 1871. During his work of twenty years he built church, house, and schools. The last years of his life were spent in St. Joseph's after his retirement through ill health. In 1888 Fr. Thomas Walsh was appointed to assist in the parish and he became Rector in 1891. He built some fine new schools in Bold Street. Unfortunately he died suddenly in 1901. For over 20 years the mission was entrusted to the care of Fr. C. Morris. Later Fr. P. Kelly (afterwards Canon at St. John's, Rochdale), Fr. Roger Wearden, and Fr. Joseph Keaton have been Rectors here.

Taken from "Salford Diocese and its Catholic past", a survey by Charles A. Bolton, a Priest of the above Diocese. Published 1950 on the First Centenary for the Diocese of Salford.

This site provides historical information about churches, other places of worship and cemeteries. It has no connection with the churches etc. themselves. For current information you should contact them directly.
