The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

"DALTON, a township in the parish of Wigan, hundred of West Derby, in the county of Lancaster, 5½ miles W. of Wigan, and 1½ mile from Newburgh railway station. There is a National school for both sexes. The land is equally divided between pasture and arable, with 50 acres of woodland. The village is considerable."
