Sion Primitive Methodist, Helmshore

The church does not have a graveyard.

It was founded in 1839. It is now closed and has been demolished, but we do not know the date of closure.

Jack Woods tells us:

It was built by my grandfather Eleazar Law, master joiner, with Mr Holden, builder. My aunt laid the foundation memorial stone for which I have the certificate, 25 May 1895 when the church was rebuilt.

The Primitive Methodist church was an early 19th century (1807) secession form the Wesleyan Methodist church and was particularly successful in evangelising agricultural and industrial communities at open meetings. In 1932 the Primitive Methodists joined with the Wesleyan Methodists and the United Methodists to form the Methodist Church of Great Britain.
