Church History

It was founded in 1877.

The few Catholics in this district had long distances to walk to church. The first effort to set up a chapel came through Fr. John Baste in 1877. Two small cottages in Maple Street were rented and a poorly furnished chapel received the few Catholics. The Rev. C. Muller took charge and was helped by Dean Brindle to buy land in Old Lane and to build a school-chapel. This was opened in 1878 by Canon Sheehan, Vicar-General. Fr. Thos. Walsh was here from 1879 to 1888, and built the presbytery. Fr. B. Flynn was forced to raise funds to enlarge the schools. In May 1892 he brought in Canon Richardson and Fr. Bernard Vaughan as special preachers to help reduce the debt. The new school-chapel was opened in 1903. Fr. Francis Oakes, afterwards Dean, was here from 1904 to his death in 1930. He never realised his dream of building a new church, although he worked and saved for this. Fr. W. Guinan built the new church in 1933.

Taken from "Salford Diocese and its Catholic past", a survey by Charles A. Bolton, a Priest of the above Diocese. Published 1950 on the First Centenary for the Diocese of Salford.
