The church has/had a graveyard.Church History
It was founded before 1264.The present church was built in 1870-1873 on the site of the previous 15th century church, and the church was consecrated 12th feb 1873 by James Fraser, Bishop of Manchester. One of the beams of the nave roof was inscribed 1616, but the tower and Tyldesley chapel had probably been erected about 100 years earlier, around 1500. It was originally dedicated to St Peter, but this was changed by the end of the 14th century to St. Mary the Virgin.
Church Records
Whilst every effort has been made to record exact details of record office and library holdings you are recommended to check with them before visiting to ensure that they do hold the records and years you wish to examine. Similarly check with transcript publishers to ensure they cover the records and years you require before making a purchase.

- Volume 87 - Bap, Mar & Bur 1625-1700
- Volume 155 - Bap, Mar & Bur 1701-1753
Transcripts/indexes in progress
- 1754-1790 are being transcribed
for publication by the
Lancashire Parish Register Society.
Status: Apr 2007 - Transcription, collation with BTs and introduction have been completed.
Work on transcripts and indexes start off with good intentions, but circumstances can arise which mean that the task is larger than first envisaged, or other tasks require the trancribers time. So there is no guarantee that publication will always take place or that initially envisaged target dates will be met.
The work being undertaken is not being done as part of GENUKI, so it will not be available for online research as part of this site. This does not of course preclude it being made available in this way elsewhere. The final publication medium will be determined by the trancriber.
