Church History

It was founded in 1822 and closed in 1991. Although it did not have a building until 1836, the congregation is said to have met from 1828 in a former chapel of the Countess of Huntingdon's Connexion. Original chapel built 1836, converted in 1860 to Sunday School, replaced by Providence school of 1879. When the old chapel was turned into the Sunday School the present chapel was built, 1859-1860, architect James Simpson. There is some evidence that the church met in another place from 1828. [Info from CHRISTOPHER STELL "An inventory of non-conformist chapels and meeting-houses in the North of England" HMSO 1994]

The chapel closed in October 1991. The main building still remains empty and in poor state despite various plans for use. The Sunday school building has been demolished. The congregation began in 1822 and had various homes until they built a chapel with school in 1836 which opened in 1837. This building then became the Sunday School, and was replaced in 1880, now demolished. The present chapel building was put up in 1860. They joined the Congregational Union in 1873.

The chapel was demolished in September 2013.

In 1972 the Congregational church joined with the English Presbyterian church to become the United Reformed Church.
