Church History

It was founded in 1894.

The Salford Almanac for 1892 announced that a new mission was being formed at Oswaldtwistle, and that it would be called St. Oswald's; Fr. Robert Smith was to be appointed. The next year's Almanac said that this had been postponed. In fact Fr. Jn. Brereton began the mission in 1894. The dedication was soon changed to St. Mary's. This mission with its fine set of buildings is largely his creation. He had accepted the charge of St. Thomas of Canterbury's, Manchester, when death overtook him.

Until the end of 1933 Fr. James Callaway had charge of the mission. During his time of office the parish sent out a very large number of boys to be ordained for the diocese and for religious orders.

Fr. G. Griffin and Fr. A. Reardon followed and made various improvements.

Taken from "Salford Diocese and its Catholic past", a survey by Charles A. Bolton, a Priest of the above Diocese. Published 1950 on the First Centenary for the Diocese of Salford.
