Church History

The church at Satterthwaite is of unknown origin, but it was in existence as early as 1577. It was rebuilt and enlarged in 1835, in the early English style of architecture, with a square tower in which is one bell. The living is now a vicarage in the gift of the vicar of Hawkshead, and in the incumbency of the Rev. T. Edge Wright. Its value is £473. A small school was erected in 1849 by public subscription, aided by grant from the Committee of Council on Education. The school has an average attendance of 76, and is under the charge of Mr. J. B. Dobson. The parochial district of Satterthwaite is comprised within and is co-extensive with the limits of the three hamlets of Satterthwaite, Grizedale, and Dale Park.
