The church had a graveyard which was cleared in 1965 to make way for a Littlewoods store (now Primark). The graveyard was laid out for 300 plots.
It was founded in 1823. It closed in 1963 and was pulled down in 1964. The original building faced into Eastbank Lane (now Eastbank Street) but the church was rebuilt facing into Chapel Street.
In 1972 the Congregational church joined with the English Presbyterian church to become the United Reformed Church.
