Church History

It was founded in 1926.

The parish of the English Martyrs was established in 1921. Previously the people had attended Mass at Calderstones Institution, which was attended by a priest from Stonyhurst. Fr. James McDonnell was sent by the Bishop to begin the new parish and to found a church near the old Abbey. Fr. Bannon succeeded him and built the present church, which was opened by Bishop Henshaw in 1926. Fr. Bannon retired through ill-health and departed this life at Pleasington Priory. Fr. Cookson was parish priest from 1930 to 1949.

Taken from "Salford Diocese and its Catholic past", a survey by Charles A. Bolton, a Priest of the above Diocese. Published 1950 on the First Centenary for the Diocese of Salford.

This site provides historical information about churches, other places of worship and cemeteries. It has no connection with the churches themselves. For current information you should contact them directly.
