Market Bosworth

"Market Bosworth parish, which is the head of a Poor Law Union, a Petty Sessional, and a County Court District, is in Sparkenhoe Hundred, and comprises the townships of Barlestone, Carlton, Market Bosworth, Shenton, and Sutton Cheney and in 1871 had 2416 person, living in 516 houses, on 7449 acres. It gives name to a small ancient market town, seated on a pleasant emminence, 13 miles W. by S. of Leicester, 7 miles N. by W. of Hinckleyand 107 miles N.W. by N. of London. Its township, in 1871, contained 949 inhabitants, and comprises 2806 acres. The Ashby-de-la-Zouch canal passes about a mile west of the town; and the Ashby and Nuneaton railway, which was opened on Sept. 1 1873, passes through the parish further to the west of the canal. There is a station on the Ashby and Nuneaton joint line (London and North Western and Midland Railways). The soil is mostly clay, and belongs partly to the Earl of Lovelace, but mostly to Sir Alexander Beaumont Churchill Dixie, Bart., who succeeded his father in 1872, and is the eleventh baronet."[White's History, Gazetteer and Directory of the Counties of Leicester and Rutland. 3rd Edition 1877]

Census

The 1851 Census for Leicestershire has been indexed by the Leicestershire & Rutland Family History Society. Volume 2 includes Market Bosworth which has been published on microfiche only.

Church Records

The Society of Genealogists holds copies of records of marriages from 1567 - 1699, baptisms and burials from 1567 - 1670 which can be studied at their library in London.

Civil Registration

The Registrar's Office in Market Bosworth closed in 1945. Certificates of birth, death and marriage can now be obtained from the Superintendent Registrar at Hinckley, Coalville or Leicestershire Central.

Description and Travel.

Bosworth Battlefield Centre and Country Park is provided by Leicestershire County Council, and has extensive displays and special events.

History.

Market Bosworth's greatest claim to fame is probably the Battle of Bosworth Field, which took place near to Market Bosworth, and at which King Richard III was killed, on 22 August 1485.

Poorhouses, Poor Law.

The Market Bosworth Union comprised of 31 parishes. The Union Workhouse, situated on the Lichfield Road, was erected in 1836, and had room for 200 inmates although it seldom housed a quarter of that number.

The Rossbret Institutions site includes a page for the Market Bosworth Union which two photographs of the old workhouse which has been converted into residential accomodation.
