Description & Travel

Bushby is a small village, a township and was a small parish adjacent to Thurnby and 4 miles east of Leicester city, into which it is now absorbed as a suburb. The parish covered about 679 acres.

If you are planning a visit:

  • By automobile, take the A47 arterial road east out of Leicester city and stop at Thurnby. This is as close as you can get to Bushby village without walking.

Military History

In 1925, Lieut.-Col. James BURNS-HARTOPP of the Royal Horse Guards was one of the principal owners of land in the parish. He was High Sheriff of Leicestershire in 1902.

Politics & Government

  • This place was an ancient hamlet of the county and became a modern Civil Parish in December, 1866.
     
  • The parish was in the ancient Gartree Hundred (or Wapentake) in the southern (or eastern) division of the county.
     
  • In April, 1935, this parish was abolished and all 679 acres were amalgamated back into Thurnby Civil Parish and as part of the Leicester Urban District.

Poor Houses, Poor Law

  • Bastardy cases would be heard in the Leicester petty session hearings.
     
  • As a result of the 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act, the parish became part of the Billesdon Poorlaw Union.
