Hoton (Houghton)
Description in 1871:
"HOTON, or HOUGHTON, a township and chapelry in Prestwold parish, Leicester; near the river Soar and the boundary with Notts, 3¼ miles NE of Loughborough r. station. Post town, Loughborough. Acres, 1,850. Real property, £3,031. Pop., 401. Houses, 87. The manor belongs to the Marquis of Hastings. The living is a p. curacy, annexed to the donative of Prestwold, in the diocese of Peterborough. The church was rebuilt in 1837, and has an embattled tower. There is a Wesleyan chapel."

- Hoton was in the Leake subdistrict of the Loughborough registration district.
- In 1935 this parish was re-assigned to the Barrow-on-Soar registration district.
- The 1851 census for Leicestershire has been indexed by the Leicestershire & Rutland Family History Society. The whole index is available on microfiche. The society has also published it in print and Volume 13 covers the Barrow on Soar District of which Hoton was a part.

- The Anglican parish church was originally dedicated to Saint Anne. It was rededicated to St. Leonard of Noblac around 1837. Saint Leonard is the patron saint of women in labour and prisoners of war.
- The church was apparently built in the 12th century.
- Hoton chapel was rebuilt in 1838.
- In 1926 a major restoration of the church was undertaken.
- Shortly after World War II the church was closed. It is now a private residence.
- The Anglican parish register dates from 1653.
- The Anglican parish church was in the rural deanery of Goscote (second portion).
- The Wesleyan Methodists had a chapel here by 1849.
- Civil Registration started in July, 1837.
- Hoton was in the Leake subdistrict of the Loughborough registration district.
- In 1935 this parish was re-assigned to the Barrow-on-Soar registration district.
- The Registrar's Office in Barrow-upon-Soar closed in 1945. Certificates of birth, death and marriage can now be obtained from the Superintendent Registrar at Leicestershire Central or Loughborough
Hoton is a village, a township and an ancient parish in Leicestershire. The parish abuts the southern border of Nottinghamshire and was, for centuries, a Chapelry in Prestwold parish. The parish is 118 miles north of London and just 2 miles northeast from Loughborough. The parish covers 1,410 acres.

- This place was long a Chapelry in Leicestershire, but was incorporated as a Civil Parish in December, 1866.
- The parish was in the ancient West Goscote Hundred in the northern division of the county.
- The Common Land was enclosed here in 1760.
- As a result of the 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act, Hoton became part of the Loughborough Poor Law Union.
