Military History

Illston Grange, formerly called Illston New Grange and later Illston Hall, was built for Colonel J. W. BAILLIE, who, until 1895, was Colonel Commanding the Leicestershire Yeomanry. The house, which was of red brick, was demolished in 1927 after the death of his heir, Lt.-Col. F. D. M. BAILLIE.

James W. BAILLIE can be found here in the 1881 census. In the 1881 census he is living here with his wife, Elizabeth F. BAILLIE, and two daughters. His rank is given as Major.

In the 1901 census, James W. BAILLIE is enumerated here with his wife, Elizabeth and his brother, Alexander H. BAILLIE, and 14 servants.
