Description in 1871:
"OSGATHORPE, a village and a parish in Ashby-de-la-Zouch district, Leicester. The village stands on an affluent of the river Soar, 2 miles N N E of Swannington r. station, and 5 E N E of Ashby-de-la-Zouch; and is a pleasant place. The parish comprises 1,220 acres. Post-town, Loughborough. Real property, £1,982. Pop., 351. Houses, 82. The property is subdivided. The manor belongs to J. B. Story, Esq. Bricks are made. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Peterborough. Value, £240. Patron, the Marquis of Hastings. The church is of the 13th century; was restored, with addition of apsidal E end, in 1861; has a tower and spire; and contains a restored ancient octagonal font. There are a free grammar-school for 40 day pupils, endowed residences for 7 clergymen's widows, with £317 a year, and other charities £9."

Church History

  • The Anglican parish church for Osgathorpe is dedicated to Saint Mary the Blessed Virgin.
     
  • The first Norman church was built here in the 13th and 14th century.
     
  • The chancel was built in 1860, the former chancel being incorporated with the nave.
     
  • This church tower was added in 1930.
     
  • The church seats 150.

Description & Travel

Osgathorpe is a village and a parish 122 miles north of London, just 3 miles north of Swannington and 5 miles east of Ashby-de-la-Zouch. The parish covers 922 acres.

The village is in a fertile valley on a stream that feeds into the Soar River. If you are planning a visit:

  • By automobile, pick up the A512 just east of Ashby-de-la-Zouch and head toward Loughborough. After you cross the A447, Osgathorpe is just off to the left.

  • The parish was in the ancient West Goscote Hundred in the mid division of the county.
     
  • In April, 1935, many parish boundaries were "adjusted". Thringstone parish was abolished and its 482 acres were added to Osgathorpe parish.

Schools

  • Thomas HARLEY founded the Grammar School here in 1670, but his school closed in 1901.
