"THORPE-ARNOLD, a parish in Melton-Mowbray district, Leicester; 1¾ mile NE of Melton-Mowbray r. station. Post town, Melton-Mowbray. Acres, 1,742. Real property, £2,811. Pop., 124. Houses, 25. The manor belongs to the Duke of Rutland. The living is a vicarage, united with Brentingby, in the diocese of Peterborough. Value, £400. Patron, the Duke of Rutland. The church is old."

Politics & Government

  • This parish was an "ancient parish" of Leicestershire and became a modern Civil Parish when those were established.
     
  • The parish was in the Framland Hundred (Wapentake) in the northern (or eastern) division of the county.
     
  • Prior to 1936, the parish covered 1,788 acres.
     
  • On 1st April, 1936, the parish of Thorpe Arnold was abolished. 401 acres went to Melton Mowbray Civil Parish and the remaining 1,387 acres went to Waltham Civil Parish.

Poor Houses, Poor Law

  • Bastardy cases would be heard in the Melton Mowbray petty session hearings.
     
  • In 1834 PEACH's charity was established with £1,500. The interest was partly applied to bread for the poor and partly for educational purposes.
     
  • As a result of the 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act, this parish became part of the Melton Mowbray Poorlaw Union.
