Description in 1871:
"WANLIP-originally Onelip-a parish in Barrow-upon-Soar district, Leicester; on the river Soar, 1½ mile W of Syston r. station. Post town, Leicester. Acres, 952. Real property, £2,157. Pop., 117. Houses, 25. The manor belongs to Sir G. J. Palmer, Bart. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Peterborough. Value, £336. Patron, Sir G. J. Palmer, Bart. The church is good; and there is a national school."

- Wanlip was in the Rothley subdistrict of the Barrow-on-Soar registration district.
- The 1851 census for Leicestershire has been indexed by the Leicestershire & Rutland Family History Society. The whole index is available on microfiche. The society has also published it in print and Volume 13 covers the Barrow on Soar District of which Wanlip was a part.

- The Anglican parish church was dedicated to Saint Mary and Saint Nicholas.

Wanlip is a village, a township and an ancient parish in Leicestershire. The parish is now a part of the conurbation of Leicester city. The parish is only 4.5 miles from Leicester city centre, 2 miles north of Birstall parish. The parish covers 975 acres.

- By Automobile, the A46 trunk road passes throught the village just north of Leicester city.
- The Wanlip brook flows through the parish to eventually join the River Soar.
- Wanlip Hall was the seat of Lady Augusta PALMER in 1911.

- The parish was in the ancient West Goscote Hundred in the eastern division of the county.
- In 1710, Walter SPENCER of Wanlip left 5 Shillings to be given yearly in bread to the poor of the parish at Christmas and Easter.
- The Rev. William SPENCER, rector of Thurnscoe in county York, in 1714 left £5 to be paid yearly to the poor of the parish forever.
- As a result of the 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act, Wanlip became part of the Barrow-upon-Soar Union.
- Bastardy cases would be heard in the Leicester petty session hearings.
