Church History

  • The Anglican parish church is dedicated to Saint Peter.
  • The church may have been erected by the Saxons about the time of the Norman Conquest.
  • There is evidence that the existing church was erected on the foundations of a still older building, presumably a church.
  • The church was rebuilt in 1857.
  • The church seats 100.
  • The Diocese of Lincoln declared this church redundant in May, 1981. The building was sold as a monument in November, 1986.

Description & Travel

Sotby is both a village and a parish in the Wold Hills, 16 miles east-northeast of Lincoln, 8 miles northwest of Horncastle and 5 miles east of Wragby. Great Sturton parish lies to the south and Ranby parish to the east. The parish covers about 1,600 acres.

Poor Houses, Poor Law

  • Bastardy cases would be heard in the Wragby petty session hearings on the first Thursday of every month.
  • As a result of the 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act, the parish became part of the Horncastle Poor Law Union on 16th January 1837.
