WRAWBY is a pleasant village and parish, in the Northern division of the county, parts of Lindsey, southern division of the wapentake of Yarborough, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Brigg, rural deanery of Yarborough, and archdeaconry and diocese of Lincoln, situate on an eminence from which there is a fine view of the town of Brigg, from which place the Manchester and Sheffield Railway station is distant one mile and a half, and 163 miles from London. The church of St. Mary is an old building, with a square tower with 3 bells: the tower is very old, in the Early English style: the nave is in the debased style: the chancel was rebuilt about 60 years ago. The register dates from 1675. The living is a vicarage, annual value £230, with residence, in the gift of Clare College, Cambridge, and held by the Rev. John Rowland West, M.A., of that College. In 1842 a National school was built, partly by subscription and partly by a parliamentary grant. Here are chapels for the Independents, Wesleyans, and Primitive Methodists. Valentine Dudley Henry Cary-Elwes, Esq., of Great Billings, Northamptonshire, who is lord of the manor, and Lord Yarborough and Clare College are the principal landowners. The soil is a light loam; subsoil, gravel and clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, and oats. The area of the parish is 5,070 acres, and the population in 1861 was 2,961. The population of the township only was 1,257.
