"CATESBY, (or Catesby-abbey), a parish in the hundred of Fawsley, in the county of Northampton, 4 miles to the S.W. of Daventry, its post town. It is situated on the borders of Warwickshire, and contains the hamlet of Newbold Grounds. This parish was the site of a convent, founded in the 12th century by Robert de Esseby, for nuns of the Benedictine order. It flourished till the Dissolution, when it had a revenue of "£145. There are a few remains of the conventual buildings. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Peterborough, in the patronage of T. and M. Scrafton, Esqrs. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, has long been in ruins. Divine service is performed in the chapel in the grounds of Catesby House. This mansion stands on the site of the nunnery, and is the ancient seat of the Parkhurst family, of whom was John Parkhurst, the eminent Orientalist, and author of the well-known Hebrew and Greek Lexicons.
