"HARTWELL, a parish in the hundred of Cleley, county Northampton, 6 miles E. of Towcester, 7 S.E. of Northampton, and 2¼ from the Roade station of the London and North-Western railway, which intersects the parish. The village is small, and part of the land is in common. Adjoining the parish on the E. side are the two extra parochial places of Salcey and Hartwell Lodge. The living is a perpetual curacy* in the diocese of Peterborough, value £120. The church, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, is a stone structure erected in 1852. In the interior is a Norman arcade which was removed from the old church. The Wesleyans have a chapel, and there is a free school, supported by the Duke of Grafton, who is lord of the manor. The charities consist of the interest of £450, left by the late Thomas Barber, and 5 acres of allotment land."
