"MAXEY, a parish in the liberty of Peterborough, county Northampton, 1¾ mile S.W. of Market-Deeping, its post town, and 8 miles N.W. of Peterborough. It is situated on the river Welland, and contains the hamlet of Deeping-Gate, where the river is crossed by a stone bridge to Market-Deeping. The inhabitants are chiefly engaged in agriculture. Here are remains of the Lolham Bridges, constructed by the Romans, to conduct the Ermin Street over the low grounds adjoining the river. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Peterborough, value £304, in the patronage of the dean and chapter. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, is an ancient stone structure with a square tower, containing six bells. The interior of the church contains many old tombs. The parochial charities produce about £126 per annum, of which £94 is realised by the' Church estate. There is a National school for both sexes, of recent erection.
