"WAPPENHAM, a parish in the hundred of King's-Sutton, county Northampton, 5 miles S.W. of Towcester, its post town, and 7 from Brackley. The village is situated on the river Tove. The parish includes the hamlets of Astwell and Falcatt, near the former of which is an ancient mansion once the, seat of the earls Ferrars. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Peterborough, value £354, in the patronage of the bishop. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, has two brasses bearing date from 1481. The parochial charities produce about £30 per annum. There are National schools, and the Wesleyans have a chapel. Lord Southampton is lord of the manor." "ASTWELL, a hamlet chiefly in the parish of Wappenham, but partly in the parish of Syresham, in the hundred of Sutton, and county of Northampton, 6 miles to the S.W. of Towcester. At Astwell Farm there are ruins of the old manorial residence and the chapel. The manor has been held successively by the Billing, Lovett, and Ferrer families, and now belongs to the Duke of Buckingham. This hamlet is a meet for Lord Southampton's hounds."
