"St. Martin's is a discharged rectory, valued at £8. 1. 5½., and in the gift of the Crown; net income, £62. The church is an ancient structure, with a tower which, in the reign of Edward III., was considerably lowered, on complaint of the scholars that the townsmen used to retire into it and annoy them with arrows, stones, and other missiles." [Samuel Lewis. A Topographical Dictionary of England (1848)]
