"BRUERN VILLE, an extra-parochial liberty in the hundred of Chadlington, in the county of Oxford, 4 miles to the N. of Burford. It was the site of an abbey for monks of the Cistercian order, founded in 1147 by Nicholas Basset, and valued at the Dissolution at £124. The estate was given by James I. to Sir Antony Cope, who built a mansion, which was afterwards burnt down. It is now the property of the Sackvilles."
