ALVELEY, Shropshire

"ALVELEY, a parish in the hundred of Stottesdon, in the county of Salop, 6 miles to the S.E. of Bridgnorth. It is situated on the eastern bank of the river Severn, and comprises the liberty of Romsley, which is within the liberty of the borough of Bridgnorth, and the township of King's Nordley. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Lichfield, value £103, in the patronage of Mrs. Wakeman. The church, which had formerly a chantry, is dedicated to St. Mary. A free school was founded here in 1616, by John Grove, for poor children of the parish. Its present income is £26. He also founded some almshouses for decayed labourers."
