"BARROW, a parish and township in the liberty of the borough of Wenlock, in the county of Shropshire, 2 miles S.W. from Broseley, and 2 miles to the E. of Much Wenlock, its post town. The village, a small scattered place, is situated on the Wenlock and Ironbridge road, within the franchise and borough of Wenlock. The living is a perpetual curacy annexed to the rectory of Willey, in the diocese of Hereford. The church, dedicated to St. Giles, is an antique structure, containing some Saxon remains. It consists of a turret, with two bells, nave, transept, chancel, and porch, and was restored in 1850. Whilst the repairs were going on, a full size painting of a knight on horseback and several other pictures were discovered on the walls, beneath the numerous coatings of plaster. In the church is an antique font; and in the churchyard is the tombstone of Tom Moody, the famous whipper-in to George Forester. The parochial charities consist of a free school and almshouses, endowed by John Slaney in 1613, the revenue of which is £34. Lord Forester is lord of the manor and chief landowner."
