"BITTERLEY, a parish in the hundred of Overs, extending also into the hundred of Munslow, in the county of Salop, 4 miles to the N.E. of Ludlow, its post town. It comprises the townships of Bitterley, Cleeton, Henley, Hill-upon-Cot, Middleton, and Smitten. Coal and iron abound here, especially at Clee Hill, and many of the inhabitants are employed in working the collieries and mines. The living is a rectory* in the diocese of Hereford, of the value, with the curacy of Middleton annexed, of £750, besides glebe and rates, in the patronage of the Rev. C. Walcot, incumbent. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. A free grammar school here was endowed by John Newborough in 1712, and has an income of £34 a year. There are some other charities, producing about £26." It is situated on a branch of the river Teme. The living is a perpetual curacy annexed to the rectory* of Bitterley, in the diocese of Hereford. Sir William R. Boughton, Bart., is lord of the manor." "SNITTON, a township in the parish of Bitterley, county Salop, 3 miles E. of Ludlow."
