"HIGH ERCALL (or ERCALL MAGNA), a parish, in the Wellington division of the hundred of BRADFORD (South), county of SALOP, 6 miles (N.W.) from Wellington, containing 1952 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Salop, and diocese of Lichfield and Coventry, rated, in the king's .books at £17. 6. 8. H. Pulteney, Esq. was patron in 1795. The church is dedicated to St. Michael. In this parish is a free school for the education of poor boys, and an hospital for the maintenance of eight decayed householders."
