"MORETON-CORBET, a parish in the hundred of North Bradford, county Salop, 8 miles N.E. of Shrewsbury, its post town, and 4½ S.E. of Wem. The village, which is small, is situated on the river Roden, and on the road from Wellington to Market Drayton, and is wholly agricultural. The soil is of a sandy loam alternating with a stiff clay. The surface is generally flat, except a ridge of elevated land which nearly intersects the parish. There are several mills on the banks of the river Roden. The tithes have been commuted for a rent-charge of £330. The living is a rectory* in the diocese of Lichfield, value £361. The church, dedicated to St. Bartholomew, is an ancient structure, with a tower containing six bells. The church has several stained windows, and some ancient effigies and monuments to the Corbet family. The parochial charities produce about £6 per annum. There is a school entirely supported by Sir V. R. Corbet, Bart., the lord of the manor and sole landowner. There are the ruins of Moreton-Corbet Castle, which was erected on the site of an older one in the 16th century, and was burnt during the Civil War."
