"BROME, (or Broome), a parish in the hundred of Hartismere, in the county of Suffolk, 2 miles to the N. of Eye, and 22 miles S.E. of Diss station, on the Eastern Union Section of the Great Eastern railway. The living is a rectory* in the diocese of Norwich, of the value with that of Oakley annexed, of £661, in the patronage of Sir E. Kerrison, Bart. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. The charitable endowments of the parish amount to £18 per annum. Broome Hall, now the seat of the Kerrisons, was for some centuries the seat of the Cornwallis family, who take from it the title of viscount. In the reign of Henry VIII., Sir John Cornwallis was Steward of the Household to Prince Edward (afterwards Edward VI.); and Charles, fifth baron, was created Earl Cornwallis and Viscount Broome by George II., in 1753. The old mansion, which was erected about 1585, and contained some fine specimens of oak carving, has recently been taken down, and a new hall built on its site. It is approached by a magnificent avenue of oaks.
