"BURGATE, a parish in the hundred of Hartismere, in the county of Suffolk, 4 miles to the N.W. of Eye, its post town. The Eastern Union railway passes near it. The living is a rectory* in the diocese of Norwich, value £560, in the patronage of the bishop. The church is dedicated to St. Mary, and contains a monumental brass of Sir William Burgate, who died in 1409."
