"BLEADON, a parish in the hundred of Winterstoke, in the county of Somerset, 6 miles to the W. of Axbridge. Weston-super-Mare is its post town. It is situated on the river Axe, which is here navigable, and includes the hamlets of Oldmixton and Shiplet. The Bristol and Exeter railway runs through the parish. The living is a rectory* in the diocese of Bath and Wells, of the annual value of £469, in the patronage of the Bishop of Winchester. The church is dedicated to St. Peter. The rectory of Bleadon was held by Meric Casaubon, a learned critic, son of a greater father, Isaac Casaubon. The former died in 1671. There are remains of British encampments and several barrows in the neighbourhood, where coins, weapons, and other relics have been found."
