Chedzoy

"CHEDZOY, a parish in the hundred of North Petherton, in the county of Somerset, 3 miles E. of Bridgwater station on the Great Western railway. The living of this parish was formerly held by Bishop Nikke and A. Pascal. The living is a rectory* in the diocese of Bath and Wells, value £480, in the patronage of the Rev. G. 0. Mullens. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, is an ancient building in the Gothic style of architecture, and possesses a register of early date. There is a parochial school for both sexes, supported by the rector. Near this place the battle of Sedgmoor was fought, and in one of the buttresses of the church may be seen a whetstone, said to have been used to sharpen axes for that engagement. In the possession of the rector are some swords and coins found on the battlefield, and near the church earthen urns and fibula have been discovered."
