"EDINGTON, a parochial chapelry in the parish of Moorlinch, hundred of Whitley, county Somerset, 6½ miles N.E. of Bridgwater, its post town. The Edington Road station on the Somerset and Dorset railway is 2 miles to the N. of the village. This is now a separate ecclesiastical district, and includes the hamlet of Birtle. There is a chalybeate spring impregnated with sulphur, said to be efficacious in scorbutic disorders. The neighbouring moor is much resorted to by the lovers of botany on account of the variety and rareness of its ferns and orchids. The living is a perpetual curacy* in the diocese of Bath and Wells, value with the curacy of Chilton-on-Polden, £120. The church is a stone edifice of ancient date, dedicated to St. George. There is also a district church at Burtle Hill. The charities amount to about £25 per annum. There is a school with a small endowment. Lady Waldegrave is lady of the manor. In the vicinity have been discovered a Roman tessellated pavement and other antiquities." From The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland (1868) Transcribed by Colin Hinson © 2003
