North Wootton

"NORTH WOOTTON, a parish in the hundred of Glaston-Twelve-Hydes, county Somerset, 2½ miles S.E. of Wells, and 3½ S.W. of Shepton Mallet. The village is situated at the entrance of a valley watered by two small rivulets, which turn several mills, one being employed for grinding bark for a tannery. The surface is varied, and the soil a clayey loam intermixed with red marl. The tything of Worminster has recently been annexed to this parish. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Bath and Wells, value £50, with an addition of £40 from the ecclesiastical Commissioners. The church is dedicated to St. Peter. The register commences in 1728. There is a Sunday-school, with a small endowment. The charities produce about £5 per annum. W. Langton, Esq., is lord of the manor."
