The village, which is very small, is situated near the river East Lynn, on the road from Porlock to Lynton. It is wholly agricultural. The tithes have been commuted for a rent-charge of £80, and the glebe consists of 11 acres. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Bath and Wells, value £108. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, is an ancient stone structure, with a square tower containing one bell. The register dates from 1674. Nicholas Snow, Esq., is lord of the manor. A revel is held on the Sunday nearest old St. James's Day." From The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland (1868) Transcribed by Colin Hinson © 2003
