"STOWELL, a parish in the hundred of Horethorne, county Somerset, 4½ miles S.W. of Wincanton, its post town, and 1 mile from Temple Combe station on the Salisbury and Yeovil railway. The soil consists of stone brash, with a subsoil of clay and limestone. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Bath and Wells, value £193. The church, dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene, was rebuilt in 1834. The register dates from 1745. There is a Sunday-school. The Rev. T. Marriott Dorrington is lord of the manor."
